How to Set Up Alipay in China with an Overseas Card

Updated and official sources checked: · Mainland China

Alipay can make everyday merchant payments easier, but it is optional. If you are still choosing between apps, cards and cash, start with How to Pay in China as a Tourist.

Before you start

Have your own supported bank card, passport, a phone number you can keep using abroad and access to your bank’s verification method. Card support depends on the network, issuer, account and merchant. Install the official Alipay app from your device’s app store; do not follow unsolicited installation or verification links.

Set up your account step by step

  1. Register or sign in. Choose the correct country code and enter your mobile number. Complete the SMS prompt and select English where offered.
  2. Find Bank Cards. Look in the account or “Me” area, choose Bank Cards and Add Card. Menu names can change by app version and account.
  3. Add your own card. Enter the requested details accurately, including the billing address if asked. Complete your bank’s verification. If rejected, check card eligibility and ask the issuer about the linking attempt.
  4. Complete requested identity checks. Use the passport and name belonging to the account holder. Follow the in-app document and identity-verification prompts; wait for approval if review is required.
  5. Secure your account. Set the payment password or other security controls offered by the app. Never share passwords, payment codes or one-time verification codes.
  6. Check readiness. Confirm the card is listed and there are no unresolved prompts. Review the fee and limit information in the app. Card linking alone does not prove a merchant payment will succeed.

These steps follow the requirements for card and identity information in Alipay’s official international-card agreement. Use the current app prompts if the screens differ.

Make your first purchase

  1. After arriving in mainland China, choose a small purchase at a staffed merchant.
  2. Use Scan for the merchant’s eligible QR code, or open your payment code for the cashier to scan if supported.
  3. Check the merchant name, amount, selected card and any fee. Confirm only when they are correct.
  4. Verify success in transaction history and with the cashier. If the result is pending, check it before trying again.

Understand what card linking enables

This is a way to fund eligible merchant purchases. It does not mean you can transfer money to people, withdraw wallet cash or top up a balance with an overseas card. Do not rely on old TourPass instructions or treat a personal QR transfer as a merchant purchase.

Fees, limits and failed payments

The commonly quoted ¥200 / 3% schedule is not a universal fee guarantee. Promotions, card eligibility and account conditions can change, and your issuer may add its own charges. Read the current fee context and large-payment checklist.

Keep a backup

Bring your physical card and some RMB cash, keep your phone charged and retain access to your registered number. For the rest of your trip, use the Survival Guide’s arrival steps and Chinese help cards.
